REGISTERING WITH UKMTO AND MASCHOA
Although the Gulf of Aden has seen a significant decrease in Pirate attacks in the last few years, it is still necessary registering with the relevant safety authorities so they can monitor you on your passage through and come to your aide, should you be unfortunate to need it.
But although there is a bit of material to read, all of which can be found on the websites listed below, the registration and reporting process is straight forward.
- Read all the relevant material from both UKMTO and MSCHOA to understand their roles and procedures in the Gulf of Aden and The Red Sea.
- Email them well ahead of your departure to inform them of your intended route, passage time and to receive further advice from them.
- Upon departure from your last port BEFORE entering the reporting zone (for most people this will be the Maldives) send an Initial Report with the requested details of your boat and progress – find example of report on the websites.
- Then continue to send 1 or 2 daily reports to both UKMTO and MSCHOA, until you reach your destination, containing the information below.
- Upon reaching your destination, send a final report, informing them that you have arrived.
- Do the same thing all over again, when you leave for your next destination in the Gulf or The Red Sea.
NOTE: They might ask you to continue to report even after you have arrived in a Port as long as you are within the reporting or High Risk Area.
