ABOUT

a Yank, a Dane and a Black Duck

“This blog is for our dear family who we have to love from afar,
all the good friends we have made along the way who have made the journey bright,
any new sailors on a small boat who need a bit of encouragement,
and experienced sailors with sweet boats who wants a good laugh.”

It all started a drunken night at a bar in Melbourne, Australia. One was a bartender and one bought a whiskey.
Our first voyage together was in a shopping cart downhill from Northcote to Fairfield. It was not a glorious vessel, yet it sufficed for the journey we were on.
What was glorious was a cold winter’s day a little more than a year later, in 2017 in Tasmania. The day we bought a boat called Black Duck.
Tasmania is where our voyage really began, and it is in our experience an awesome place to grow sea-legs.
In the three years we spent there, we grew close with the community and sailed from there, thinking that we had probably started with the best.
Black Duck is small, slow and simple, but over the years she has become the boat to suit our needs and adventures. In this blog we will share with you, stories from the sea and the people we meet and the practical and impractical way we live on it.

We are Riley and Klara, a Yank and a Dane
and this is the story of a Black Duck.

Where are we going?
We will see. The world is too round to make square plans.

Where do we want to go?

First, we want to get to where the winter is good enough to make a snowman, and then we will see how much we miss the tropics.

How do we get there?

Through rain and shine, and possibly a sandstorm in the Red Sea.

How long will it take?

Sometimes we give it up tomorrow and other times we sail forever.
